New Lexington makes early statement at golf tournament

ZANESVILLE - If Wednesday was any indication, it figures to be another competitive season for golf in the Muskingum Valley League.

In the Preseason MVL Tournament at Jaycees, New Lexington (320) finished in third-place.

The tournament accounted for one-third of the final standings. The rest of the standings are based equally on results of regular season dual matches and the postseason MVL Tournament.

With soft conditions — the result of heavy rains Monday evening into Tuesday morning — pin locations were more accessible.

Brayden Metzger, Caleb Barnette and Tyler Brown had 82s for New Lex.

Many consider New Lex the favorite, with much of its cast returning from 2015.

"Metzger, Barnette, Foraker — that's easily the team to beat," Crowley said.

Coconis agreed.

"If they play to their capability, they are going to be tough," Coconis said. "I think it will be us, New Lex and Tri-Valley. It all comes down to having four scores."
