HS Fall Sports Previews: NL Boys and Girls Cross Country off to good start

New Lexington Cross Country

The Panthers also return plenty of runners after the boys finished fifth and the girls sixth in last year’s MVL meet.

Tre Stratton enters his sixth season with a junior-heavy boys roster. Juniors Coleman Cox, Zach Fortner, Brett Moore, Brent Newlan, Wyatt Saxton, Andrew Stevenson, Jacob Williams and Riley Young return, and classmate Nick Pickrell is new to the team.

Senior Jeffery Rayburn is also back, while sophomores Jacob Vance, Jacob Poling and Andrew Brunton and freshmen Joe Mohler, Devon Pascarella and Chase Duperow are newcomers.

“I hope to be a serious contender for a top 3 MVL spot,” Stratton said of the boys squad.

The girls lost three key runners, but five seniors, Allison Kunkler, Bailey Novaria, Kacey Shipley, Makala Shipley and Rose Spangler, return. Juniors Taylor Hiles and Anna Mohler and sophomores Carlee Barnette and Laura Montell are also back.

Sophomore Abbi Alfman and freshman Mady Shiplett headline the newcomers.

“(With losses), we are rebuilding the girls team,” Stratton said. “I do expect our senior girls to do quite well.”
